Cornerstone Training Institute Begins Offering EPA-accredited Renovation, Repair & Painting (RRP) Certification

On April 22, 2010, EPA legislation will make RRP certification mandatory for renovators who disturb paint in pre-1978 and child occupied facilities. Cornerstone Training Institute is now offering RRP certification for firms and contractors who will be affected by this new legislation.

Rochester, New York (March 4, 2010) – Cornerstone Training Institute, an Environmental Safety Firm located in Rochester, NY, announced today the launch of their new RRP certification class. Cornerstone has begun offering the class in the wake of the EPA’s RRP bill which requires RRP Certified Renovators to take a one-day course about using "Lead Safe Work Practices" on the job. Contractors who violate the RRP regulations may face fines in excess of $32K per violation per day.

The new RRP bill will affect thousands of contractors in renovation, remodeling, painting, window replacement, plumbing, electrical work, heating & air-conditioning, demolition, plus work performed by trades like carpenters, electricians and handymen. The rule also applies to individuals working for rental property owners, schools, and day care providers, non-profits, and governmental agencies.

Starting April 22, 2010, all contractors who disturb paint in pre-1978 and child occupied facilities with more than 6 square feet per room or 20 square feet outside must be RRP trained and certified. The legislation requires all firms and their employees to be properly trained to use lead-safe work practices in an effort to minimize lead exposure to building occupants. Certification is achieved by successfully completing an 8-hour training course offered by an EPA-accredited training provider like Cornerstone Training Institute.

Darren Yehl, President and Training Director at Cornerstone Training Institute, was excited to announce the RRP class. "With the new RRP bill taking effect in April, a lot of contractors are scrambling to get certification, especially in the Rochester area. Cornerstone looks forward to providing EPA-accredited training to local firms and contractors who will be affected by this legislation. We’re also pleased to be a part of the EPA’s effort to ensure that businesses and homes are lead free."
